NewJeans members Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin, and Hyein have announced plans to appeal the Seoul Central District Court’s decision, which ruled that their exclusive contracts with ADOR remain valid. The first ruling marks a major development in the ongoing legal dispute between the members and their agency.

⚖️ Court Rules in Favor of ADOR

On October 30, the Seoul Central District Court ruled in favor of ADOR, affirming the validity of the exclusive contracts. The lawsuit had been filed by ADOR seeking a judicial confirmation that its exclusive contracts with the NewJeans members were still legally binding.

The court’s ruling effectively rejected the members’ argument that their contracts had been terminated due to alleged breaches by ADOR.

🗣️ NewJeans Members Announce Appeal

The members’ legal representative, Law Firm Sejong, released an official statement following the verdict, saying:

“While the members respect the court’s decision, they maintain that it is impossible to resume normal entertainment activities under ADOR given the complete breakdown of trust. They will therefore file an immediate appeal.”

The statement added that the members hope the appellate court will reexamine the facts and applicable contract law “to deliver a fair and wise judgment.”

📜 Background of the Dispute

The dispute dates back to November 2024, when the five NewJeans members announced that they were unilaterally terminating their contracts with ADOR, citing the company’s alleged violations. Soon after, ADOR filed a lawsuit to confirm the validity of the contracts and also submitted a court injunction to prevent the members from engaging in independent entertainment activities.

🚫 Independent Activities Remain Restricted

The Seoul court had previously approved ADOR’s injunction request, barring the members from conducting solo or independent promotional activities. Despite the members’ objections and subsequent appeals, their applications for reversal were all denied, leaving the injunction in full effect.

🔍 What Happens Next

With the appeal now underway, the case will move to the appellate court, where both parties are expected to present additional evidence and arguments. Legal experts note that the appeal process could take several months, during which NewJeans’ group and individual activities will likely remain paused.

The outcome of this case will have significant implications for artist-agency relationships in K-pop, potentially shaping future contract standards and dispute resolutions across the industry.
