Prosecutors have once again requested a four-year prison sentence for A, the operator of the controversial YouTube channel “탈덕수용소” (Taldeok Detention Center), who was found guilty of producing and spreading defamatory videos targeting multiple celebrities, including IVE’s Jang Wonyoung.

⚖️ Prosecution Demands a 4-Year Prison Sentence

During the first appeal hearing at the Incheon District Court on October 16, the prosecution urged the court to uphold the same sentence as in the first trial, citing the severity of the crimes. “There were multiple victims, none of whom have forgiven the defendant,” prosecutors stated. “Running a paid membership program and earning more than ₩200 million makes this case particularly grave.”

💰 Over ₩250 Million Earned Through Defamation

According to the investigation, A operated the YouTube channel between October 2021 and June 2023, posting 23 defamatory videos about seven celebrities. Among these, 19 videos contained insulting or appearance-shaming content directed at five of the victims. Through paid subscriptions and advertising, A earned approximately ₩250 million (about $180,000) over two years.

🗣 Defense Pleads for Leniency

The defense argued that the original ruling was already sufficient, stating, “The defendant has faced public criticism and understands the pain caused to the victims. They made a compensation deposit before the first trial and voluntarily deleted the YouTube channel.”

🙏 Defendant’s Final Statement and Apology

In their final statement, A expressed remorse: “I gathered online comments and articles to make the videos, thinking it was about the public’s right to know. Now I clearly understand how wrong I was.” The defendant added that they have been “living under stigma” and are “receiving psychiatric treatment while reflecting deeply” on their actions.

📅 Sentencing Scheduled for November 11

The final verdict in the appeal trial will be delivered on November 11. In the first trial, A was sentenced to two years in prison, suspended for three years, with 120 hours of community service and an additional order to forfeit ₩200 million.

This case has sparked ongoing debate in Korea over defamation laws, online accountability, and the monetization of harmful content — especially when targeting public figures and K-pop idols.
